Teaser video

Our teaser is ready! Mercury drops January 1st, 2012!

It's a bit strange with the lighting and textures... they look much different in game but then, I didn't record this video so no idea what that's about.

Project nearing completion

It's true, the Mercury Falling project is nearing completion. I could rattle on here, wax eloquent and whatnot, but chances are you only read because you like the pictures anyway.  One disclaimer: This is a low quality lightmap.I have to say that the base interiors are Wolf's doing and some of the outdoor detail work as well, specifically the Mercury Base. Good job Wolf! Here you go: (Don't be a dummy. Click "read more" to see more pictures!)

About the Mercury Falling Project

This is a map designed for playing on Halo Custom Edition. It's a project that's been in development or hiatus for a few years now. From the beginning I wanted to do everything to make sure that this map will be fun to play. I've tried my hardest to make sure every gametype is at least functional. It is really a mix of silly dreams and the hard realities of designing a level for play with a game engine, with lessons learned along the way.

You will find, if you are willing to look that closely, that almost all of the 3d model is my original work. The only exception being the bridge, which you may recognize. :) Many of the textures and shaders are modified versions of stock ones, or of some other well known custom maps. Some textures are complete from-scratch remakes of stock ones (to support higher resolution), some have simply had ugly seams removed.

The original intent was to include custom vehicles and weapons. In the end, only one custom weapon has remained. The vehicles that were favorite for the map have been replaced with stock vehicles because the custom vehicles broke gameplay due to design flaws.

After ditching this project a couple of times and returning to it, I landed on the idea that this map simply needs to be finished. It's what I want to offer back to the community of people I've played Halo with over the years. It may not be an expression of what you think Halo should be, but I hope you do enjoy it... what it is, is my attempt to bring something I think is great to the game.

Mercury Falling: UNSC Outpost

The Mercury complex was considered to be one of the most important scientific finds of Forerunner technology. A power station harnessing the wind seemed to be self fueling, as well as providing more than ample power for the entire ring world. As important as this find was to the corps, it was considered very low in demand for security. Only a small group of scientists were on tour at the complex when The Covenant arrived. The scientists successfully fled and managed to activate their distress beacon. The signal was retrieved by a detachment of UNSC heavy battle cruisers passing through the system. Not knowing exactly how big the Covenant group was, the Marines came in hot and very quickly overpowered them. Unfortunately, the heat of the battle was focused on and around the Mercury power station which was so damaged that it fell from the sky. A crackled radio transmission from a dismayed scientist was heard as "Mercury... Falling!". The name stuck and strangely became true in more ways than they knew. With the power station offline, the super-slow orbit of the ring around the local moon was shifted so that it moved significantly away from the sun. Temperatures continuing to drop, the scientists were forced to pack up and leave. Being ever resourceful, the marines decided to use the complex as a live ammo Spartan training facility. Waste not, want not.
